Our Interview With Emily Weaver, President Of The Duquesne University Mock Trial

April 15, 2026

Emily Weaver is the President of the Duquesne University Mock Trial.

What inspired you to pursue leadership within this organization at your school?

I was inspired to pursue leadership within this organization because of the former executive board and the passion and drive they had for the organization. I saw them as dedicated and outstanding members, and I was inspired by them to constantly strive to be better and learn more. They were also always extremely helpful, offering answers and guidance to any question I had and helping me move forward. In my time as president I have strived to be that same helpful leader and give back to my team as they have given so much to me.

What skills can aspiring law students gain from joining an organization like yours?

Aspiring law students can gain courtroom experience as well as knowledge in trial etiquette and advice from current practicing attorneys who judge the competitions. They also gain invaluable relationships among other pre-law students within Duquesne as well as in other Universities and organizations, and with the local law community.

What advice would you give law students on making the most out of their experience in a mock trial organization?

My advice to law students in mock trial organizations is to put as much into it as you want to receive from it. Mock trial is a fantastic way to gain knowledge and experience but it doesn't mean anything if you are not actively seeking that information. Be involved, offer to help others write materials and practice, ask questions, because all of those things will help you learn things you never knew you didn't know. Help build up your teammates, a good council table doesn't have one star attorney and two backups, it is filled with evenly stellar members and that is how you will succeed.
