Geeta Karlcut is the Co-President of the Scripps Pre-Law Society.
Leadership and building community are extremely important to me and so I've looked for opportunities to show this throughout college (I've served on the student government at Scripps and am currently a Leadership Intern at the Laspa Center for Leadership). Since I enjoyed being a member of the Scripps Pre-Law Society (SPLS) and wanted to contribute to make it even better, I ran for the position of Internship Coordinator at the end of my freshman year and never looked back. I have now had the honor of serving as Co-President for two years in a row and I am so happy I decided to join Scripps Pre-Law Society as a first year!
One initiative SPLS introduced last year was providing law-related and LSAT prep books to our members. Law school and preparing for law school can be extremely expensive ventures, so SPLS wanted to provide books to our members at no cost. We allowed members to pick books that would be most helpful to them—whether that was a book about torts, intellectual property, or a study guide for the LSAT—and received a lot of positive feedback about this initiative. We hope to provide books again to our members in the future!
I think some skills that aspiring law students can practice from joining an organization like SPLS include critical thinking and ambition. SPLS hosts a variety of speakers, workshops, and events for our members. Students that show up and make the most of our events can learn more about different fields of law, prepare for the LSAT, learn how to read and brief a case, and network with other aspiring law students.
I would say go into any Pre-Law organization with an open mind—you never know what you can learn. Even though I have an idea of what field of law I want to practice, I have learned so much from talking to lawyers and paralegals in different fields. From water rights to civil litigation to reproductive rights to business law, there is so much to explore. Don't limit yourself now and be sure to ask lots of questions!
