Behind the Scenes: What Working With a Law School Consultant Actually Looks Like

Former Head of Northeastern University's Pre-Law Office

Summarize With AI:

Contents

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about what law school admissions consultants actually do, whether they’re worth the cost, and if they truly help applicants get accepted. This guide clears up the confusion by breaking down what working with a Juris Education expert looks like and how we help future lawyers succeed in a competitive admissions landscape.

Privacy guaranteed. No spam, ever.

Step 1: Personalized Application Support Package Selection

All students start with a complimentary 20-minute consultation with a Juris Enrollment Director. During this session, we focus on understanding your unique background, goals, target schools, timeline, and level of preparedness.

We’ll help you select the right package or build a custom one. Here are a few ways we can tailor any package to match your needs:

  • We offer unlimited end-to-end, school-specific application support tailored to the exact number of schools you’re applying to.
  • We can include pre-law advising for undergraduates that includes strategy planning, resume development, academic and extracurricular profile building, and LSAT preparation.
  • We offer combined LSAT + Application programs that include 60 hours of 1:1 LSAT tutoring and an LSAT score guarantee of 165+, which is considered competitive at over 82% of US law schools
  • We provide unlimited school-specific, diversity, and optional essay review based on your application list.
  • We can include additional mock interview sessions and video essay coaching.
  • We can add the Juris Education Legal Research & Publication Program, where you work 1:1 with a research mentor, complete a publishable paper, and earn academic credit from a University of California campus.
  • We can provide scholarship application support that helps you identify and apply to external scholarships. Juris students earn an average scholarship of $105,000 over their 3-year JD.
  • We can include a full Admissions Committee Panel Review by Juris experts trained to review with the same scrutiny as real admissions officers.

This 20-minute call ensures you’re set up with the right tools and the right structure to succeed.

Juris Education’s customized approach to law school admissions was key to Linnea’s success. With unlimited support, personalized guidance, and a flexible process tailored to her needs, she was accepted to 13 law schools.

Step 2: Completing the Student Onboarding Questionnaire

After enrolling, you’ll complete our detailed Student Onboarding Questionnaire. This form gives us a comprehensive view of who you are, what motivates you, and what application support you need.

Screenshot of Juris Education's Student Onboarding Questionnaire

In this comprehensive form, you’ll be asked to share:

  • Your cumulative GPA
  • Your GPA
  • Your updated resume

The Student Onboarding Questionnaire will also ask more about:

  • How you learn and work best (e.g., structured plans, flexibility, frequent feedback)
  • Your communication style preferences (e.g., warm, direct, encouraging)
  • Your time zone
  • Your availability for weekly sessions
  • Whether you’ve taken the LSAT/GRE before
  • Your target test date
  • Your values, key life experiences, career aspirations, and motivations for pursuing law

One of the most important parts of the Student Onboarding Questionnaire is the Application Planning section. This section is key to helping your advisor build a personalized strategy.

You’ll share where you are in the process, your target schools, submission timeline, any test scores or application materials in progress, and anything else you'd like your advisor or tutor to know before your first session.

Step 3: Matching You With Your Best-Fit Admissions Expert

After you complete your Student Onboarding Questionnaire, our Student Success Team carefully reviews your profile to match you with the perfect admissions consultant within 1 to 2 days.

Factors your Student Success Manager will evaluate to match you with a consultant include:

  • Your availability and schedule
  • Your time zone
  • Your target law schools
  • Your learning style
  • Your individual goals

You’ll receive a welcome email from your Student Success Manager with details about the matching process and tips on how to get the most out of your partnership.

At Juris, your consultant won’t be managing a high-volume caseload. As our Student Success Team puts it:

“Our commitment to efficiency allows us to maintain remarkably small cohorts, with counselors and tutors typically working with only 3–5 students concurrently.”

This level of personalized attention is rare, and it’s part of what makes Juris stand out. By keeping cohorts small, we’re able to give each student the time, depth, and care their application deserves, which contributes to our 98% acceptance rate.

Our consultant hiring process is equally selective. We hire only approximately 2.5% of the candidates we interview—a rate comparable to, or even lower than, the top-tier law schools our students aspire to attend.

Once you’re matched, your consultant will contact you directly to schedule your first advising call. Here are just a few of our top admissions consultants:

You’ll also receive access to JurisOS, our personalized law school application planning platform. Inside, you’ll find your customized application timeline, shared document folders, secure messaging with your advisor, and an at-a-glance view of upcoming milestones to keep you organized and on track.

While every Juris counselor brings their own strengths and perspectives, they all share a common commitment to meeting students where they are. Take a look at the approach of Ryan,  one of our admissions counselors and a Wake Forest Law alumnus, who exemplifies this mindset:

“What sets me apart is my empathy and attention to detail. I meet students where they are and talk to them in a way that feels clear and supportive. This process can be incredibly overwhelming, so I bring a calm, structured presence and really focus on listening — not just hearing, but understanding their story. From there, I help them shape that story into something compelling, genuine, and strategically crafted for success. I want every student I work with to feel empowered and confident, knowing they’re putting forward the strongest, most authentic version of themselves.”

You can watch Ryan’s counselor bio video to hear more about his background and how he supports students throughout the law school admissions process.

Step 4: Calls With Your Counselor to Understand How They’ll Further Personalize Your Consulting Package

Once you're matched with your Juris Education admissions consultant, your journey begins with a comprehensive onboarding call. This first session is all about understanding your background, learning more about your goals, and mapping out the path ahead.

During this session, your consultant will:

  • Introduce themselves and establish a working dynamic that fits your communication style
  • Dive deeper into your academic, professional, and personal background
  • Discuss your motivations for pursuing law and your vision for a legal career
  • Identify early application strengths and gaps (e.g., GPA trends, LSAT score, leadership, legal exposure)
  • Review your initial school list and discuss reach, target, and safety strategy
  • Explain how to use Google Drive and JurisOS to track deadlines, draft documents, and communicate efficiently
  • Share your custom project planner to help manage timelines, essays, and deliverables
  • Answer any early questions and outline next steps

You’ll walk away from this call with a clearer sense of your positioning, next action items, and how Juris will guide every part of your law school application process. You’ll also have the chance to ask thoughtful questions to ensure your admissions consultant is the right fit for your needs and working style.

At Juris, we don’t limit calls, questions, or revisions—we offer unlimited support. You can meet with your consultant as often as you need or simply message them through the portal.

Step 5: Application Milestones, Timelines, and Staying on Track With JurisOS

Once you're working with your counselor, you’ll receive access to JurisOS, our secure online platform that helps you stay organized and on track throughout the law school admissions process.

Your customized application timeline will show key dates and tasks for each of your target schools. You’ll also have a schedule of all upcoming sessions with your counselor, so you can prepare and plan ahead.

Our counselors are also trained to meet students where they are, accommodate busy schedules, and fast-track the application process when needed.

Take Brandon, for instance. He took the LSAT in October, already late in the admissions cycle, and was feeling overwhelmed by everything he had to do. But once he partnered with Juris Education, his counselor helped him move quickly and efficiently:

“The experience level [at Juris Education] was unparalleled to anything I’ve seen before on the Internet in regards to how experienced the counselors were…I strongly believe that if I was paired with any other counselor that Juris had to offer, I would’ve had a similar result in being accepted to law school and obtaining a scholarship.”

You can watch Brandon’s full video to hear more about how we helped him get accepted to Loyola University Chicago School of Law below.

JurisOS also includes a to-do list of every step in your application process, updated in real time as you complete milestones.

Step 6: Building and Editing Your CAS Application: Personal Statement Creation, Resume Building, and Essay Writing

Once your strategy is set and school list finalized, your consultant will work with you to build every key component of your law school application, ensuring your materials reflect your strengths, goals, and unique voice.

Building a Balanced Law School List

Your admissions consultant will help you craft a personalized and well-balanced law school list, prioritizing schools where you'd be genuinely excited to attend and setting you up for long-term success in your legal career.

Together, you’ll evaluate and rank programs based on factors like:

  • Your LSAT score (actual or predicted)
  • Your cumulative and major GPA
  • Your interest in specialized programs (e.g., JD/MBA, JD/MPA, or Public Interest Law tracks)
  • Career goals, such as BigLaw, clerkships, public interest, or academia
  • School rankings and employment outcomes (e.g., T14 schools, regional powerhouses, feeder schools for specific markets)
  • Geographic and location preferences (e.g., in-state tuition, proximity to job markets, or desire to stay near home)
  • Scholarship opportunities and overall cost of attendance
  • Campus culture, diversity, clinical opportunities, and alumni network strength
  • Any additional factors important to your personal or professional goals

Your consultant will ensure your school list includes a strategic mix of safety, target, and reach schools to maximize your odds of admission.

Personal Statement Brainstorming, Drafting, and Editing

Your consultant will help you craft a compelling and authentic personal statement that aligns with your narrative and highlights the qualities law schools value most. The process typically includes:

  • Brainstorming key experiences, challenges, and turning points
  • Selecting a central theme or “why law” narrative
  • Outlining and writing a strong opening hook
  • Tying your story to legal interests, advocacy, or goals
  • Receiving detailed feedback to refine tone, flow, and impact

With unlimited revisions, once you upload a draft, your counselor will provide prompt and thorough feedback until your essay is polished and perfect!

Resume Development

Law school resumes are different from job resumes. Your consultant will help you:

  • Structure your resume for legal admissions standards
  • Highlight leadership, service, academics, and research
  • Quantify accomplishments and refine bullet points
  • Ensure consistency in formatting, grammar, and tone

You’ll also receive guidance on how to tailor your resume to complement your personal statement.

Optional, Diversity, and School-Specific Essays

Many law schools have optional additional essays. Your consultant will help you write and refine:

  • Diversity Statements: If you bring a unique perspective, background, or experience, your counselor will help you share your story authentically and effectively.
  • Addenda: Your consultant will help you draft optional explanations for GPA dips, LSAT scores, character & fitness disclosures, or other concerns without sounding defensive.
  • School-Specific Essays: For programs that allow or encourage them, your counselor will help you create customized, relevant content that shows genuine interest.

Every essay is reviewed for structure, voice, tone, clarity, and alignment with your overall application narrative.

To help you stay on top of everything, our JurisOS platform includes a robust Essay Tracker that keeps detailed tabs on every writing component: what’s been drafted, what’s in review, and what’s still outstanding. With real-time updates, due dates, and progress status clearly visible, you'll never miss a deadline or lose track of your writing progress.

BONUS Step: Admissions Committee Application Panel Review

If included in your package, your consultant can send your application to a Juris Education internal review panel. This group includes multiple admissions experts who simulate how a real law school admissions committee will evaluate your application. You’ll receive:

  • Additional essay feedback
  • A candid read on your strengths and red flags
  • Final suggestions to strengthen your file before submission

Privacy guaranteed. No spam, ever.

Step 7: Scholarship Strategy and Application Support

Juris students earn an average of $35,000 per year in scholarships, totaling over $100,000 throughout their law school education. Many of our students receive even more substantial scholarships, including full-tuition scholarships.

Law school is a major financial investment, but Juris Education helps students reduce the cost through a targeted scholarship strategy that includes both external awards and merit-based institutional aid.

Your consultant will help you identify the best external scholarships that align with your goals, background, and qualifications. They will work closely with you to brainstorm and refine scholarship essays, guide you on gathering the right materials, and edit your application documents to ensure they are polished, clear, and compelling.

In addition to third-party awards, Juris focuses on helping students position themselves for merit-based scholarships offered directly by law schools. That starts early in the process. From day one, your counselor works with you to develop a strong applicant profile that will stand out to admissions committees.

You can see these results firsthand in the stories of our students who secured full-ride scholarships to law school with the help of Juris Education:

Step 8: Law School Interview Prep

Not all law schools require interviews, but for the ones that do, this final step plays an important role in how admissions committees evaluate candidates. Some schools invite applicants to traditional one-on-one interviews, while others request timed video essay responses that simulate real interview conditions.

Your Juris Education counselor will prepare you for both live interviews and recorded video assessments. If you receive an invitation to interview, they will schedule mock sessions that mirror the format and style of the specific school’s process. These simulated interviews are conducted virtually and include realistic law school interview questions, allowing you to refine your responses in a low-pressure setting.

Your counselor will help you craft, record, and polish video responses if your school requires them. Your counselor will ensure you present yourself clearly and authentically within the school’s time constraints. You will receive detailed feedback on everything from body language and pacing to tone and substance.

Each mock session will be scheduled through JurisOS, where you can view the date, time, and purpose of each practice session. These sessions are designed to boost your confidence, improve your delivery, and ensure you are fully prepared, whether you're answering a dean’s questions face-to-face or submitting a timed video essay on your own.

Because many of our counselors have served on admissions committees themselves, they understand exactly what schools are looking for and what they’re likely to ask. This insider knowledge helps ensure you go into your interview with clarity and confidence.

Step 9: Post Application Submission Support

Submitting your applications isn’t the end of your journey with Juris Education. Your counselor remains by your side through every remaining step of the admissions process. Once your personal statement, resume, and essays are finalized and submitted, your counselor will continue to check in with you regularly for updates and next steps.

If you're placed on a waitlist, they’ll guide you through crafting strategic update letters or a strong letter of continued interest to show your ongoing enthusiasm and highlight any new accomplishments or context. If a school allows additional materials post-submission, your counselor can help you determine what’s worth sending and how to frame it effectively.

For applicants considering deferral, your counselor can help craft a compelling request that maintains your offer while explaining your rationale. If you've been accepted to multiple schools, they’ll assist in comparing offers, including financial aid and scholarship packages, to ensure you make a decision aligned with both your goals and your budget.

Juris counselors also support you with scholarship reconsideration and negotiation, helping you build a compelling case for additional aid.

If, after working with our counselors and fulfilling all program requirements, you don’t get accepted to law school, we’ll work with you until you do. Thanks to our Ultimate Acceptance Guarantee, we’ll support you again for free in the next two application cycles.
