Dr. Winterberg has published peer-reviewed work in journals such as Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Personnel Assessment and Decisions, and Ethics & Behavior. He has contributed book chapters on topics such as human-technology partnerships at work and dark and destructive leadership. He has presented at over 20 conferences, including the International Personnel Assessment Council Annual Conference, the Meeting of the Association for Research in Personality, and the Annual Conference for the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He also produces applied research outputs, including white papers, technical reports, blog posts, and podcast appearances for Hogan Assessments, focused on evidence-based selection and workplace decision-making.
Dr. Winterberg’s experience spans law, criminal investigation, social science research, and higher education, allowing him to help students think with academic rigor and a real-world perspective. Earlier in his career, he worked in legal research and consulting roles focused on employment, business, contract, and civil procedure law, and he remains a licensed attorney in Oklahoma. Dr. Winerberg has also provided expert scientific expertise in high-profile labor and employment law litigation for confidential clients. For his academic excellence, Dr. Winterberg was honored with the Order of the Curule Chair in law school and with the Bellwether Fellowship for completing his PhD in a timely manner with personal and professional integrity.
As an educator, Dr. Winterberg has taught a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses across multiple universities. He has worked as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tulsa, Park University, and the University of Oklahoma. He is currently a part-time faculty member at Capella University and an assistant professor at Colorado Technical University. He has taught courses in organizational leadership, psychology, statistics, business ethics, human resource management, and research methods.
Mentorship is central to Dr. Winterberg’s work. With 14 years of research coaching experience and leadership across 50 projects, he has served as a research mentor and Dissertation Chair at Capella University, a research mentor and Dissertation Committee member at the University of Tulsa, a Tulsa Law Review Note & Comment research mentor at Tulsa Law, and a graduate student intern mentor at Hogan Assessments.
A distinctive part of Dr. Winterberg’s background is his experience in criminal law and law enforcement settings. He has conducted criminal investigations, enforced laws and institutional policies, written legal reports, and trained new officers as a patrol officer and field training officer. He also served in the United States Marine Corps, including as a military police officer and infantry team leader, with deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Earlier clinical and public service work also gave him exposure to veterans’ issues, client interviewing, and legal aid practice. This combination of legal, investigative, and service experience gives him a strong foundation for mentoring students interested in criminal law, policing, public policy, civil rights, and the broader justice system.

Students he has worked with have published in outlets such as Personality Science, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Tulsa Law Review, and presented at conferences including SIOP, the Association for Test Publishers, the Association for Research in Personality, the American Psychological Association, and the Academy of Management. Students he has supported have been accepted to programs at the University of Tulsa, the University of Oklahoma, Purdue University, Rice University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and others.
