Gregory Coleman is the President of Fresno State Mock Trial.
I joined mock trial three years ago, and ever since, it has become a central part of my life. Being a part of this organization has taught me many skills that have been invaluable to both my education and career development. In addition, the people in this organization have become some of my closest friends, and I value those connections deeply. That’s why I chose to become president of the club, so I could give back to both the organization and the people within it.
Mock trial gives undergraduates foundational skills that are important for succeeding as an attorney by allowing students to participate in simulated trials. Students practice opening statements, questioning witnesses, arguing rules of evidence, and more. These are skills that many students do not get to practice until law school, so mock trial gives them valuable early experience.
Do not be afraid to reach out for help. Your professors and counselors are there to help you grow and reach your full potential, but they can only help if you ask. They can guide you through choosing law schools, preparing applications, securing letters of recommendation, and more.
Make genuine connections with your team. Your teammates can become some of your closest friends, and building those relationships also helps your team perform better together. In addition, make connections with your coaches. Many of them have already walked the same path you are on now and can provide valuable guidance and support along the way.
We're proud to interview student leaders like Gregory Coleman to help future lawyers understand the benefits of extracurricular involvement.
